Have you heard of or seen so called “flat earthers” on the internet? The “Flat Earthers”, or FE’s from now on, are people in our modern day and age who believe that the Earth is flat, despite any and all evidence saying otherwise. The idea is that there is a vast conspiracy to control what people believe about the shape of the earth, and, thus, there are tons of manufactured images, video and accounts that have been created and maintained over the past several decades to keep people in the dark as to the TRUE shape of the planet earth.
Yes, I am serious.
I do not know the validity of this popular image, which supposedly recalls a Twitter conversation between Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and the Flat Earth Society:
You get the point, though, right?
It’s kind of tough for me to make fun of the FE’s however when we in the church have our own type of flat earthers, which I will call “Flat Bible” people. The FE’s are willfully ignorant despite any and all evidence pointing to a round earth. Now, whether they are really, truly believers of a flat earth or merely trolls with nothing better to do that stir up a pot of trouble I cannot say, but Flat Bible people act much in the same way. These are people who are convinced the bible says what they BELIEVE the bible says rather than what the bible actually says, and no amount of evidence will change their mind. Are they really believers in what they say or merely willing to ignore the truth because its more than they can bear to believe? I don’t know!
A good example of this is Paul’s instructions for women in the church:
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
The words are there and pretty easy to understand, but a lot of Christians will not accept them but will instead find ways to work around them. “Oh those words were ONLY to the Corinthian church because the women were yelling questions about scripture across the room to their husbands! Men and women had to sit on separate sides of the church, see, and the women, the women were so rude and vapid and dumb that if they ran in to scripture they didn’t understand, see, they would YELL THEIR QUESTIONS ACROSS THE ROOM TO THEIR HUSBANDS! So, Paul, see, he told the Corinthians, and ONLY the Corinthians, that their women had to keep quiet. This absolutely doesn’t apply to TODAYS MODERN church! And why would a woman ask her husband about scripture when there is a wealth of books and videos on the bible! Why, that makes women practically a slave of her husband! What if my husband is a scriptural idiot, or if he says a scripture means something I don’t like! No way!”
I use this example because it is an easy one for me to pull out of the bible and doesn’t require a whole lot of explanation. At no point in the bible does this oft marched out story get mentioned and I have never seen anyone who trots it out back it up with evidence from any other historical source. The fact of the matter is that the bible is pretty clear about the intent of Paul’s instructions, but, it cannot be! The bible is FLAT! Only because of carefully laid out conspiracy by men have people been tricked into believing that God holds men and women to different standards, and that, in some cases, women do not have the same “right” as a man does. Only because of the same carefully laid out conspiracy is woman commanded to defer to her husband for biblical instruction and wisdom! Preposterous!
The bible, however, is filled with tons of “round bible” doctrine that “flat bible” people cannot accept, and WILL NOT accept, no matter how much evidence is presented.
- That God esteems man over woman (1 Cor 11:1-16)
- That a man can have more than one wife and it is not sin (Exodus 21:7-11, 2 Sam 12:8); Many verses about the patriarch’s and even God Himself (Ezekiel 23).
- That death without the accepting of Christ means hell. There are no “write ins” in the Book of Life (Hebrews 9:27)
- Woman is cursed to be rebellious towards her husband(Genesis 3:16)
I will be the first to admit that I am no bible expert. I don’t read it as much as I want to or should, but I would like to think that if someone comes to me and says I am wrong about a scripture, and can then back up their assertion with additional scripture, that I would change my mind provided that I am presented with THE TRUTH!
That we should all be so incline to seek the truth! Without it how can we please God? In the above scripture it says that it is “a shame for women to speak in the church”. A SHAME! Have you ever had your kids do something shameful in front of others? You know that sinking feeling you get in the pit of your stomach as you watch them perform whatever shameful action while you sit there quietly screaming in your head? We shame ourselves, we bring shame to the name of God and shame the Holy Spirit when we are disobedient to Gods word.
Don’t be a “flat bible” Christian. Be like the Bereans, whom Paul praises as being “more noble than those in Thessalonica” because “they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Don’t take anything I say here as gospel truth, but instead seek the word to determine whether what I say is right or not. And not just me, here, but ANYONE who claims to deliver an understanding of scripture should have their words compared DIRECTLY TO THE SCRIPTURE! Then, be prepared to change your understanding if it is warranted! It may not be an instantaneous process, but may require prayer, further reading and introspection on your part!
Don’t be a “flat bible” Christian. Take a look again at the picture of the Twitter post I posted along with this blog entry. Understand the foolishness and immaturity of one who sees the truth, but refuses, steadfastly, to accept it.
Pick up your bible. You hold the truth in your hand. It may be hard to accept sometimes, but it will not change, and it will set you free.
